Center for Data Journalism Nepal (CDJN) is a not-for-profit media development organization based in Nepal. CDJN aims to promote data-driven journalism through collaborative partnerships with journalists and media organizations in Nepal.
CDJN believes in public interest journalism. We use data journalism as a tool to uncover stories of injustice and abuses of power.
We strive to strengthen Nepali journalists’ capacity so that they can produce well-researched, in-depth, high-quality stories that result in impacts through policy changes or a push for reform.
CDJN has identified four key thematic areas to promote data journalism in Nepal.
We offer bespoke training to journalists and other professionals willing to enhance their skills. Our courses are taught by data, investigative journalists and experts from relevant fields. Courses are designed to provide participants with theoretical grounding and real-world experiences.
Since 2021, CDJN has conducted a series of intensive training sessions for Nepali journalists to help them develop skills to carry out Data Journalism and Visual Storytelling.
In June 2021, CDJN trained more than 30 journalists in Health Data Reporting with a focus on COVID-19. The trainees produced four stories after the training.
In May 2022, we ran a four-day training on Climate Investigations using OSINT (Open Source Intelligence) and Data. A cohort of 12 Nepali journalists was trained in digital investigation and data-driven storytelling.
Our third training of 2022 entitled Use of Data in Public Interest Reporting saw the participation of 14 journalists, who learned how to identify credible data. They also learned fact-checking skills. The participants learned the significance of data on local governance and planning.
Altogether, over 50 Nepali journalists have benefited from data journalism training by CDJN. Here’s the announcement of our latest training session.
As a follow-up to our training programs, we offer fellowships to journalists based on the story pitches. During the story production process, the fellows receive both editorial and technical support, including research assistance, data analysis, visualization, and mapping. This has resulted in the production of impactful data-driven stories on issues of environment and health.
We believe that collaboration leads to shared ownership and a greater impact. With this in mind, we have teamed up with Nepal Check to fact-check claims in the public interest, scrutinizing viral information, misinformation, and disinformation.
Our collaboration involves conducting research on online platforms using OSINT tools, analyzing and verifying data and geo-tagged information, as well as producing visual content together. We collaborate with Nepal’s leading news media including Kantipur, Online Khabar, Ukeraa News, Swasthya Khakar, and Himal Khabar.
CDJN has established a dedicated help desk to support journalists who encounter challenges while working with data. Our team provides assistance to journalists to refine data and conduct analysis, and visualization. Journalists currently working on data-driven stories can request free technical support from CDJN by clicking here.
Center for Data Journalism Nepal (CDJN) is registered as a profit not sharing company at the Office of Company Registrar (OCR) in 2014 and has received a certificate of affiliation from the Social Welfare Council as well.
Since 2015, we have organized and participated in various events and workshops on Data Journalism in Nepal. We also believe in Open Data which plays a vital role to promote government accountability and transparency.
